Sadly, despite numerous letters and a great show of support from the local community and many SOS members, the Anglian Water Planning Applciation was granted by Babergh District Council.
We have sought advice from a legal team as to whether a Judicial Review would have the decision overturned but it is felt this would be extremely costly and ultimately that Babergh would be able to amend their mistake regarding policy, and still allow the application to go through.
Anglian Water have put forward a proposal at Alton Water to allocate a 7.45 acres site for 92 pitches for motor homes, caravans and tent sites together with a new shower and toilet block including washing up facilities.
SOS have always viewed Alton Water as an ideal location for quiet recreational pursuits within the Special Landscape Designation adjacent to the AONB and as such we would be supportive of improvements to the sailing club and the visitors centre. However at first glance the development of a large site for caravans and motor homes could lead to not only traffic disturbance but would change the nature of Alton Water for good. The site, since it is a fresh water reservoir, has always been locked up at 8.00pm in the evenings and one assumes that it would need to be open 24 hours to meet with the comings and goings of the new visitors. By a rough calculation of say 3 or 4 people per pitch it could lead to a resident weekend population of some 350 people which is not far off half the population of Stutton.
This matter will be discussed at the Society’s next committee meeting but we would welcome your initial thoughts and views on the proposal which can be viewed on our website although for ease we enclose some of the documents from the planning proposal.
